EISTEDDFOD (1972)
Variations and Penillion for flute, viola, and harp,
on the Welsh folk tune "Ymadawiad y Brenin"(19:30)
Commissioned by the Orpheus Trio
Published by Galaxy-Highgate Music

A splendid conception, excitingly played.
                                                                        Alan G. Arner, Chicago Tribune

A fascinating set of variations in search of an old Welsh tune.

                                                                     Robert Sherman, New York Times

A modern work for virtuoso players. Each instrument has a stunning cadenza within the piece. Although difficult, all parts are idiomatically written and well marked, and the piece is worth the effort involved in learning and performing it.

                                       L. K. N., American String Teachers Association Journal

Jan Bach has successfully organized this skillfully composed set of 12 variations into a multisectional structure that uses all three instruments both soloistically and in ensemble in a wonderful variety of timbres and lyrical lines. The work is interesting enough to merit a position in a professional trio's repertoire and difficult enough to challenge relatively mature performers.

"Helix" adroitly juxtaposes diverse stylistic elements into an eclectic, unified whole.
