Duets from PEOPLE OF NOTE

Original music by Jan Bach copyright (c) 1993 by Jan Bach; original poems by Laurence McKinney copyright (c) 1939, 1940 by Crowell-Collier Publishing Company, renewed 1967 by Laurence McKinney, and used by permission of Dutton Signet, a division of Penguin Books USA Inc.

These duets have been excerpted from PEOPLE OF NOTE, a twenty-nine-movement work of duets, quartets, and ensembles for solo singers, orchestra, and optional chorus by Jan Bach. Because the work performed in its entirety would run well over an hour and a half, Dr. Bach has chosen this unique method of distributing the work's duets to those singers and instrumentalists who might be interested in performing them.

Each duet includes an instrumental performer (woodwind, brass, timpani, harp, or piano) and a singer (soprano, alto, tenor, or bass) who sings the Laurence McKinney poem which describes, in humorous terms, the
Each part has been scanned in full-page PCX format and placed in PDF format, which can be read and/or printed only by the ADOBE ACROBAT.

These duets are FULLY COPYRIGHTED MATERIALS for which permission has been granted specifically by Penguin Paperbacks for the purpose of distributing them electronically throughout the world. Each duet is offered for download to musicians COMPLETELY FREE OF ANY REQUEST FOR PAYMENT, and computer-literate musicians are also encouraged to exchange the files with others. However, none of these duets is to be performed in a concert where admission is charged without a Broadcast Music, Inc. public performance license agreement (which most presenters, professional orchestras, and university schools of music already have). It is necessary to contact BMI’s Concert Division, 320 West 57th Street, New York NY 10019 (212-586-2000) to request a license or to report performances of duets from this work.

Musicians interested in obtaining the complete score of PEOPLE OF NOTE are encouraged to contact Dr. Bach through the email address provided through his website, or to write to him c/o MEADOW MUSIC, BACH'S 831, DEKALB IL 60115.
instrument being played. The instrumental part for each duet is transposed to the instrument's own key (for instance, the clarinet is written a major second higher than it sounds) so that both performers can read from copies of the same part, provided, of course, the singer makes the necessary adjustments in the instrumental parts when taking his or her entrance pitches from non-concert instruments.
